It is not very common for you to find someone these days who has not yet heard of the company Verizon. Coming into existence on June 30th, 1983, Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp created Verizon. It was, and remains, one of the largest mergers in US business history.
It was incorporated under a different name at the time. It was initially called Bell Atlantic Corporation, but the name was changed to “Verizon” in 2000. Verizon is currently providing several services to its customers, including Wireless, Internet, TV, and Phone services.
Verizon FiOS, also commonly called FiOS by Verizon, is a bundle that offers internet access, telephone and television services. These services are provided using a fiber-optic communications network, serving more than 5 million customers, spread across 9 US states.
Verizon was among the first major US carriers that offered fiber to the home, and to no one’s surprise, received highly positive reviews from the customers. This was when they came up with the FiOS service.
When Verizon launched FiOS years ago in 2005, it was faced with a lot of criticisms. As a result, Verizon’s stock prices decreased by 4.6 percent, while its competitor, AT&T, rose by 38.7 percent.
Critics came up with the argument that the prices Verizon was offering were too low and that it might put their fiber-optic network in jeopardy, as it was a possibility that the expenses of building a fiber-optic network would surpass the returns from FiOS sales.
So far, the FiOS bundles are not available all over the United States of America. They are currently only made available in 9 US states, including Delaware, Maryland, Eastern Massachusetts, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC.
3) Internet Access
Internet access was the first service offered by the company under Verizon FiOS brand name in 2005. Initially, the peak internet speeds were around 30MBit/s. Verizon, however, decided to switch things up a little and increased its upload speeds to match the download speeds. Depending on the plan, upload and download internet speeds varied from 50 to 940 MBit/s.
To nobody’s surprise, this change was loved by the customers, and by the mid of 2016, there were 5.49 million FiOS Internet subscribers.
As of March 2021, FiOS speed tiers are as follows:
|Download Speed: 200Mbps||Upload Speed: 200Mbps|
|Download Speed: 400Mbps||Upload Speed: 400Mbps|
|Download Speed: 940Mbps||Upload Speed: 880Mbps|
Apart from its TV and internet services, the company also offers a voice-over IP service through its fiber-optic network called FiOS Digital Voice. This service was initiated in Virginia and Maryland back in September 2008 and quickly replaced an earlier service called, VoiceWing, which was also provided by Verizon from 2004 to 2009.
FiOS TV is part of the three services that come in the Verizon FiOS’s brand. At the end of 2017, Verizon reported approximately 4.6 million FiOS TV connections. To put it in simpler words, that’s a lot of connections.
FiOS packages come with high-definition and standard- definition as well as video on demand. Another unique option it gave to its customers in 2015 was to choose between a selection of channels bundled together. By the time 2015 ended, it was reported that Custom TV packages accounted for 30%-40% of new FiOS TV subscribers.
If we fast forward to 2021, FiOS TV subscribers have the freedom to choose between 125+, 225+, and 425+ channel packages. Not only that, Verizon offers FiOS TV Test Drive, which is a digital tool that analyzes the preferred channels of the customer and builds a Custom TV package accordingly.
The company uses QAM technology to deliver signals to your property using fiber optic cables. At home, the optical network terminal translates the signal into a radio frequency signal that can be used on coaxial cables already available at home, feeding the signals to a set-top box. It also uses Internet Protocol Technology for its video on demand and interactive widgets.
In December of 2018, Verizon introduced FiOS TV One. This is a service featuring wireless set-top boxes and a completely redesigned remote control which now comes with voice recognition. The wireless set-top boxes, also called FiOS TV One mini-units, connect to the primary FiOS TV One box via the internet and allow its subscriber to broadcast TV to other rooms in the house without having to set traditional coaxial cables all over the place.
